Student Use of Personal Technology

This policy outlines the principles governing student use of personally-owned technology devices on any JACS/Summit Academy property, during school-sponsored activities, or when connected to JACS/Summit Academy networks, regardless of location.

The purpose of this policy is to maximize the effectiveness of technology for learning while defining permitted times for personal device use within JACS/Summit Academy’s guidelines. The goal is to reduce distractions and social media conflicts, increase student attention, improve academic engagement and face-to-face social interaction between peers during school including lunch and passing periods. Students must cooperate and assist JACS/Summit Academy in implementing, maintaining, and enforcing this policy.

Definitions - Personal Technology Device: Any electronic device a student owns that can store, send, or receive information; connect to the internet or other networks; or record photos, videos, or sound. Examples include but are not limited to phones, personal laptops, tablets, e-readers, smartwatches, earbuds, and other wearable technology. The school day is defined as running from the bell starting the first period until the bell ending the last period of the day.

Principles of Personal Technology Device Use - Students have no expectation of privacy when using JACS/Summit Academy systems or networks. Student use of personal devices to connect to school computing resources is a privilege, not a right. The student who owns and is registered to use a Connected Personal Device is responsible for all activity related to, content stored, processed or transmitted on, the security of, and the use of, that personal device.

Activity may be monitored and disclosed, and any searches will follow applicable law and Jeffco Policy JIH. Students must comply with the district’s Acceptable Use Policy (JS) and all district and school rules. Students must keep their personal device(s) in their backpack or another approved non-accessible location at all times during the school day, while on campus, or during school-sponsored activities if the activities occur during the school day. Smart watches and other smart devices, excluding smart glasses, are allowable during the school day so long as they are not used for communication purposes nor become a distraction. In buildings where personal laptops are allowed, they must be used in compliance with the individual campus’ rules and expectations. Any device that becomes a distraction to the owner or others during the school day shall be confiscated. Cell phones and smart devices may be used on campus before and after the school day so long as they are used appropriately. Due to privacy concerns, smart glasses are not permitted on campus at any time.

If a device is confiscated due to policy enforcement, staff will exercise reasonable care until the device is returned. JACS/Summit Academy is not responsible for loss, theft, or damage.

JACS/Summit Academy does not provide technical support for personal devices.

Student Privacy - The principal or their designee, may search or inspect a Personal Technology Device when there is reasonable suspicion it contains evidence o a violation of low or policy. Searches must be limited in scope and conducted respectfully, in accordance with federal law, Colorado law, and the standards established in New Jersey v. T.L.O. (1985).

Exceptions - Any requests for exceptions must be made to the building principal or their designee prior to use. Failure to follow the use procedures contained in this policy and other relevant school or district policies may result in the loss of the privilege to use these devices to connect to school computing resources, as well as appropriate disciplinary action or legal action.

Note: We will always allow a student to call home if needed. Students may go to the front office to use the phone and call a parent. Families may also call the front office at 303-438-6985 to get a message to their student(s). Please call if the message is urgent. If a student has been asked to put their phone away, and does not comply, their phone may be confiscated. Confiscated electronics may be picked up by a parent at the end of the school day.
