Welcome to Computer Applications

In Computer Applications, spanning grades 3rd to 6th, students dive into digital skills, computer science, and responsible digital citizenship. Keyboarding skills are honed, and students explore a variety of applications and websites with a focus on safe, responsible use. Topics range from graphic design to video editing, offering a broad tech experience.

Third and fourth graders gain foundational coding skills through platforms like code.org and Scratch. Fifth and sixth graders advance to editing JavaScript, while 6th graders even begin Python projects. This year, we’re integrating the Computer Science Core Knowledge Curriculum, enhancing the learning experience with a comprehensive approach to computational thinking.

Our curriculum extends beyond technical skills, as students learn to format essays in MLA style and create engaging Google Slide presentations. We’re also excited to introduce discussions on AI responsibility, helping students understand emerging technologies thoughtfully. With our new 3D printer, students engage in hands-on projects that connect science and technology, strengthening cross-curricular connections.

About Mrs. Carroll

Teacher standing in classroom

Hello! I'm Mrs. Carroll!

I'm passionate about teaching technology to our amazing students  in grades 3-6 at Jefferson Academy, where I've been for 10 years. This is my 6th year teaching, and before that, I worked in graphic design and presentation design, which sparked my love for creativity and technology. I've been married for 29 years, have two daughters who have attended Jefferson Academy, and we share our home with an American Bulldog named Chancho.

In my Computer Applications classes, students explore the exciting world of computer science, digital tools, coding with Code.org and Scratch, editing JavaScript, writing Python, and even bringing their ideas to life through 3D printing. I love my job because I get to see students' creativity and problem-solving skills come to life as they learn to navigate and master the digital world. I'm looking forward to a great year ahead, helping students build confidence and discover their potential in technology!

My favorite thing to do is spend time with my family. We enjoy traveling together and exploring new locations. I especially enjoy visiting tropical locations! Additionally, I enjoy playing arcade basketball games and I am very good at it, although I just can't seem to beat Mr. Feddema. He's too good! 🌴
